If you are reading this blog post, then I guess you have recently lost a loved one. Listen. The truth is that no words are ever going to change that fact. And there is nothing anyone can say that will bring back your loved one. You are grieving. You are not going to read these quotes and instantly be okay. But you are not alone. You must be kind to yourself. You must remember, and you must treasure the past, but you cannot let it hold you back and stop you from living your present. I cannot pretend to know what you are going through, but I’ve put this collection of quotes together in the hope that you will be comforted in some way, by connecting to the words of others. Other people have been where you are, and they have carried on. I hope you will too.

1)

Loss is nothing else but change, and change is Nature's delight

- Marcus Aurelius

2)

Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear

3)

Our lives are not measured in years. They are measured in how many lives we touch around us

- Josh Hutcherson

Just imagine how many lives your loved one must have touched - simply by existing.

4)

You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly – that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.”

- Anne Lamott

5)

Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it - its height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. And it’s there. And you can see it, you know what it is. It’s a wave. And then it crashes on the shore and it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be, for a little while. That’s one conception of death for a Buddhist. The wave returns to the ocean. Where it came from, and where it’s supposed to be.

I got this one from Chidi, in ‘The Good Place’. Such a funny but moving series which explores ideas of the afterlife. Well worth a watch if you haven't already seen it.

6)

What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us

– Helen Keller

7)

Life seems sometimes like nothing more than a series of losses, from beginning to end. That's the given. How you respond to those losses, what you make of what's left, that's the part you have to make up as you go

- Katharine Weber

8)

Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality

- Emily Dickinson

Taken from the poem ‘Unable are The Loved to Die' (809):

9)

Ain’t no shame in holding onto grief, as long as you make room for other things too

- Bubbles, The Wire

10)

Healing doesn’t usually spring up instantaneously, instead it manifests itself in small yet delightful doses of ‘normal’

Feeling inspired? Have a go at writing out your own feelings. Release every emotion and thought onto paper, then put it away. It always helps me.

I just recently lost my child after carrying her for 9 months. Thank you for sharing. There are no words. But, these quotes are helpful; in a way.
